Description

Antiques of London

An exceptional and highly refined example of 19th century Japanese craftsmanship, this marquetry games table cabinet is a piece of true artistry as much as it is furniture. Dating to the 1800s, it stands as a testament to the extraordinary skill and precision of its maker, clearly created not only for function but as a demonstration of mastery.

The top features an expertly inlaid chessboard, beautifully executed in contrasting timbers. It folds open to reveal a larger playing surface, offering both versatility and thoughtful design. The mechanism is seamless, and the transformation from chessboard to expanded table feels both elegant and purposeful. The marquetry throughout is of an exceptional standard, with intricate detailing and crisp definition that highlights the artisan's control, patience, and technical expertise. This is craftsmanship on display, where the complexity of the work speaks confidently for itself.

The cabinet is raised on its stand, giving it stature and presence, while providing internal storage suitable for games and accessories. Every surface reflects the care invested in its creation.

The piece has been fully restored to the highest standard. It was carefully stripped back to bare wood and then traditionally French polished, enhancing the depth, clarity, and richness of the veneers. The result is a luminous finish that accentuates the intricate marquetry and brings renewed life to the craftsmanship without compromising its authenticity.

A rare and investment-worthy piece, this cabinet offers beauty, heritage, and functionality in equal measure. It is not simply a games table, but a statement of artistry and skill, deserving of pride of place in a distinguished interior.

Caring for your items

Vintage period and original items, such as leather seating, will always have a natural patina in the form of cracking, creasing and wear.

We recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost and to keep out of sunlight.

For Hand-Dyed leather items, we don't recommend placing them in direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as they will dry out and fade.

For wood, we recommend regular, thorough cleaning and waxing also.

Care

To maintain the beauty and integrity of your purchase, we recommend treating it with care. Simple maintenance practices, such as gentle washing and proper storage, can effectively preserve the longevity of your favorites. We encourage you to refer to the care instructions included with each item, designed to help you keep your purchase in top condition.

Design

Our dedication to excellence extends beyond materials; it encompasses the artistry and craftsmanship illustrated in every piece we create.
