Description
Antiques of London
This fine English pedestal Pembroke table is crafted from richly figured hardwood and dates to the early 19th century, circa 1820-1835 . Restored with care, it has been French polished to enhance the natural depth of the wood while preserving its period character, making it both elegant and practical for modern living.
The Pembroke table form takes its name from the Earl of Pembroke and was one of the most versatile designs of the Georgian and Regency eras. With two hinged drop leaves supported by swing brackets, it can be used compactly when closed or extended for dining, writing, or occasional use.
This example stands on a striking central pedestal with a shaped platform base and four splayed, reeded legs , each terminating in its original brass paw caps and castors . These refined details are hallmarks of the late Regency to William IV period , adding both elegance and mobility.
The top boards display the depth and ribboned figure typical of fine hardwood, finished with a glowing French polish that brings out its warmth and richness. The table also features one working frieze drawer , with the opposite side fitted with a dummy front for balance. The drawer construction, with hand-cut dovetails and hardwood timbers, confirms its early 19th-century craftsmanship.
Pedestal Pembroke tables are rarer than four-legged versions , and the survival of such fine details — including reeded legs, paw feet, an original working drawer, and the professional French polish restoration — enhances their desirability. This piece is not only a handsome decorative object but also a highly functional antique, adaptable to a range of interiors.

Caring for your items
Vintage period and original items, such as leather seating, will always have a natural patina in the form of cracking, creasing and wear.
We recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost and to keep out of sunlight.
For Hand-Dyed leather items, we don't recommend placing them in direct sunlight for prolonged periods, as they will dry out and fade.
For wood, we recommend regular, thorough cleaning and waxing also.
